This site records the history of an amateur operatic society based in Oxfordshire, England from 1987 to 2000, when it reformed itself into Oxford Touring Opera.

Opera Exchange was formed in 1987 to provide opportunities for local singers to perform in opera of the highest standard, and endeavoured to make its performances accessible to the widest possible audience by giving its staged performances in English, and by keeping ticket prices at a reasonable level. The early productions were given in Witney, at the Corn Exchange, but in later years all but one were performed at the Amey Hall in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK. Between staged productions the company presented concerts and recitals at various venues around Oxfordshire.

The group consisted of amateur and semi-professional singers and opera enthusiasts, and had quite an international membership. We usually had several students singing with us and a substantial number of past performers and accompanists have gone on to study at music colleges, and many are now performing professionally.

Its follow-on society, OTO, is always happy to welcome newcomers who can offer any of the skills needed in presenting opera to a professional standard, whether as performer or 'behind the scenes'.  See the OTO website for further details.
